Listen to a 1934 Tape Recording

14 Jan 2015

Magnetic tape was a German invention first demonstrated in 1935. This clip features the oldest known tape recording using a prototype Magentophone built by AEG in 1934.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra was on tour in Berlin when this recording of Mozart’s 39th Symphony was made at the Ludwigshaven Theatre on Saturday, April 27, 1935.

If you listen carefully, you can hear distortion in the pitch caused by differences in the speeds in the two motors driving the reels. Tape speed was 100 cm/sec (nearly 40 inches/sec.)
